There are many online first-person shooting games. Some of these games, such as Counter Strike and Battlefield, became successful franchise series. Another hit first-person shooter franchise game is the video game Call of Duty.
Call of Duty is a first-person shooting game that started as an offline game. It is owned and published by Activision and was released in October 29, 2003. Most of the game was set on World War II environment except for two series which are Call of Duty ii: Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2.
The game became popular because of its unique single-player gaming experience. Call of Duty also has a “shellshock” feature where the player will momentarily experience special effects when an explosion occurs near the player. The “shellshock” effects include blurred vision, muffled sound effects and slower player motion. In the game, the player is accompanied by computer-controlled allies who support the player in completing the missions.
After the success of the first Call of Duty release, Infinity Ward developed the next franchise which is Call of Duty 2. First released on October 25, 2005, the game became one of the highest-grossing video games of 2005. Unlike the first Call of duty installment, Call of Duty 2 now has a multiplayer mode in which the players can interact with other online players through a server. Each Call of Duty PC server can hold up to 64 players.
The third installment, Call of Duty 3 was first released on November 7, 2006. However, the game was released only for Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Wii, no PC compatible version of Call of Duty 3 was released.
The next franchise, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was released in November 2007. In this game, the familiar World War II settings are replaced with modern war scenarios. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare won many awards from gaming websites. It also became the top-selling game worldwide of 2007.
Call of duty 4: Modern Warfare has two game modes: Campaign Mode and Multiplayer Mode. The Campaign Mode is similar to most of the other Call of Duty games. It is where the player takes on the roles of different characters and is given missions to complete. The Multiplayer Mode, however, features team-based and deathmatch-based games modes on different maps. Each map on the multiplayer player mode requires different strategies to overcome the objectives given to the player’s team.
The fifth franchise of the game, Call of Duty: World at War was released on November 11, 2008. Other franchises of Call of duty are being developed. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is said to be released this coming November 10, 2009 while Call of Duty 7 is still under progress.
There are of course other additions to the multiplayer mode of the game. A player can download the Call of Duty 1.5 patch which gives better cinematic effects to the game therefore making it more realistic. There are also downloadable call of duty game mods and upgrades.
