LeaseWeb (www.leaseweb.com), business hosting provider among the world’s top-20 of hosting providers, has tested and implemented an ‘extremely energy-efficient’ dedicated server environment in collaboration with Dell, Microsoft and data center EvoSwitch. The dedicated server environment is currently in the beta stage. LeaseWeb clients can already try these Ultra Green Dedicated Servers at a discount.

LeaseWeb’s R&D team has installed the energy-efficient dedicated server environment in a private suite of the green data center EvoSwitch (www.evoswitch.com). The implementation was carried out in collaboration with EvoSwitch engineers.

Energy-friendly hosting

“The dedicated server setup, according to our calculations, could have a Power Usage Effectiveness of 1.1, which is considerably less than the current PUE of 1.5 within the overall data center environment of EvoSwitch,” says Thorsten Einig, Product Manager at business hosting provider LeaseWeb and member of the R&D team. “A PUE of 1.1 means that the server setup is 90% more energy-efficient in its operation than a conventional server setup with ‘standard’ cooling.”

One key basic ingredient for the innovative server setup is a cooling solution that uses Free Cooling (cooling with outside air) and Aisle Containment (separating hot and cold air).

“While these ingredients for cooling at such are nothing new, the design of the Total solution is completely different from what is common in the market,” says Einig. “It is not a cooling solution with a traditional design, and it is completely different from the current cooling setup at EvoSwitch or other data centers. Airflows travel differently from what we are used to, and cooling equipment and control systems are specifically coordinated. We have also chosen extremely energy-efficient server equipment that has been specifically programmed and tuned to the cooling system.”

The result is a server environment that allows the compressor to remain fully switched off throughout the year. Einig: “Free Cooling, or cooling with outside air, normally cannot be used throughout the year because temperatures in the Netherlands sometimes are too high. The current cooling setup, the decision to use specific server equipment and the specific coordination between individual systems entirely eliminates the need to use the compressor.”

Discount during beta stage

The new server environment has undergone extensive testing over the past six months. “And the results were amazingly good,” says Einig. “Due to our presence at EvoSwitch, we fortunately already have many servers that are quite energy-efficient in their operation, but this separate environment with its own cooling design allows us to achieve significantly higher energy savings. In the coming period, we will need to further increase the number of clients in this environment in order to achieve the pre-calculated PUE of 1.1. It is known that the PUE drops as the server volume increases.”

Einig: “While the solution runs stably within the stable preconditions of data center EvoSwitch, we have now entered a stage in which we want to increase the number of clients in that environment in order to further optimize the energy benefits. It is common knowledge that the benefits increase as the number of users increases. We now need to take that step. We have therefore decided to temporarily offer the servers in this specific environment at reduced prices. This means that clients entering during the beta stage will receive a discount.”

Hosting.com, the leading provider of managed hosting, cloud hosting and colocation solutions and a strategic VMware vCloud(TM) partner, today announced that clients can upload their own VMware virtual machines or VMDK (Virtual Machine Disk Format) files to Hosting.com’s Cloud Enterprise and Cloud Dedicated solutions. Hosting.com released this functionality in a limited beta in November and is one of the first cloud service providers to offer this capability to VMware clients and users.

Cloud Enterprise customers now have the flexibility and portability to move their virtual machines, either from their own environment or another host, into one of Hosting.com’s Cloud Super Sites. This solution can provide VMware vSphere(TM) users with a redundant layer of offsite disaster recovery and business continuance services in a secure hosted environment. Current and new Cloud Enterprise customers can access this functionality via the Customer Control Panel.

Dan Chu, VMware vice president, emerging products and solutions, commented, “Cloud Enterprise is an example of how cloud hosting is altering and enhancing the technology landscape, enabling customers to upload their own virtual machine environments. This gives VMware vSphere(TM) users the ability to easily transfer their virtual machines to Hosting.com’s cloud datacenters spread throughout the country for additional fault tolerance or improved service.” He continued, “The virtual machine upload functionality is in high demand from our customer base and Hosting.com has moved quickly to deliver this solution to the marketplace.”

The solution is ideal for companies that have VMware virtual machines at their premise or another host and need additional compute capacity in a secure cloud environment. Uploading the entire VMDK file is a seamless process that eliminates the work associated with rebuilding applications and data in a cloud or offsite environment. In addition, users can easily modify their compute, storage and disc resources through the Hosting.com control panel to meet the resource needs of the applications running within the virtual machine(s).

A video tutorial on how to utilize this service from Hosting.com is available online at http://www.hosting.com/cloudhosting/resources/video/vmdkUpload.wmv.

Joel Daly, Chief Operating Officer for Hosting.com commented, “Our product engineering and development teams were pushed to deliver a solution that allows companies to avoid the typical migration time constraints and technical burdens associated with reinstalling and reconfiguring applications - they have succeeded.” Daly continued, “The client demand through the limited beta displayed the marketplace need for multi-platform solutions; this solution allows our colocation and managed hosting clients to develop applications, websites etc in their own virtual environments and utilize our cloud platform for launch, fault tolerance or geographically dispersed disaster recovery.”

Cloud Enterprise leverages the latest in virtualization platform technology with VMware vSphere 4, and is highly available on both the computing and disk infrastructures. Starting as low as $125 per month, Cloud Enterprise provides on-demand cloud hosting via a secure web portal so businesses can rapidly deploy virtual servers and modify resources as needed. Cloud Enterprise requires no contracts and clients can purchase, provision and add CPU, RAM, and DISK online.

Dell just released a comprehensive case study on managed hosting provider NeoSpire which focuses on how NeoSpire maintains growth in the wake of a tough economy. The company’s growth was due in part to NeoSpire’s intense focus on the customer experience which mandated that NeoSpire standardize on a rock-solid server, storage and networking platform. By choosing technology partners such as Dell and building custom solutions for every customer; NeoSpire is able to not only survive but actually thrive in today’s challenging economy.

Generic and non-server grade hardware inevitably fall short of customer expectations, so NeoSpire made a conscientious decision to focus on its strengths as a managed web hosting provider and standardize on Dell PowerEdge servers and Dell/EMC storage. NeoSpire chose Dell products because the company wanted a reliable server platform with robust management tools and needed a partner that could help it respond quickly to customer needs.

“Customers who demand a five-nines SLA ask us to design their solution in a fully redundant environment,” says Jason Burnett, Director of Network Services. “We couldn’t confidently do that with lesser equipment.”

For the past ten years, using hardware that has been universally tested and benchmarked prevented a myriad of hardware issues that plague cheaper commodity server, which is no small matter for NeoSpire clients who have mission critical web applications. A number of clients have switched to NeoSpire from other hosting providers that used self-built servers that caused outages and other performance issues.

“Our web presence is a vital communication tool between us and our customers and cannot go down,” explained Elena Ganczuk, Partner at Southwest Medical & Dental, Inc. “Understanding what hardware was going to be used to build our solution was one of the deciding factors in choosing NeoSpire as our managed hosting provider.”

AppSense, the leading provider of user environment management solutions for the enterprise, today announced a partnership with Force 3 Inc., of Crofton, Maryland, a supplier of IT consulting, management and sales to the U.S. federal government. The companies also revealed that a U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) agency is already using their virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) solution to simplify workstation environment deployment and management for more than 250 client devices.

The implementation marks an expansion of AppSense’s sales and reseller efforts into the U.S. federal government, as well as increased recognition by government agencies of the cost savings, security and flexibility benefits of virtualized desktops.

“While the early adopters of VDI technology have tended to be in financial services, insurance and healthcare, we’ve seen a significant uptick in interest among government agencies,” noted Charles Sharland, CEO of AppSense. “VDI is an extremely powerful technology that saves organizations a significant amount of money and IT resources. However, users still expect personalized desktops, which only AppSense can enable in an enterprise environment. Force 3 provides exceptional services to the federal government, and we look forward to working with them, bringing our combined solution to other DoD agencies as well as additional federal branches.”

“Despite the complex requirements of this DoD project, Force 3 was pleased to be able to provide the agency with a full complement of best-in-class VDI technologies, a critical one being AppSense user environment management, which enables standard desktops to be easily personalized,” said Brad Osborne, VP of Data Center Consulting, Force 3. “Our solution can be easily replicated throughout the DoD organization, bringing tremendous security and cost benefits to the agency. This is a natural outgrowth of the many solutions we have put in place for government agencies and we expect to see additional implementations in the future.”

DoD Agency Adopts VDI Solution

The DoD agency is one of many affected by the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission (BRAC) initiative. As a result, the customer, whose mission requires heavy use of workstation-based applications, was doubling in size. In a matter of weeks, it needed to find office space, procure workstations, and determine how to support twice the number of users with no corresponding increase in IT staff.

Force 3, which had worked with this agency on several previous projects, began the engagement with a joint meeting at its Customer Innovation Center (CIC). The Center gives prospects a hands-on, multi-technology overview of advanced technologies as well as letting prospects develop and test proposed solutions prior to actual implementation. The IT consulting firm subsequently proposed a solution that would virtualize Windows XP and Vista desktops, and serve user’s individual desktop environments to them upon login. The project, the first phase of which was completed in February, 2009, enables the agency’s IT department to maintain a single image of the Army Gold Standard for Windows XP and Vista desktop – each time a user is provisioned or logged in, a snapshot is taken of the Gold Standard, applying the proper profile, so each desktop always runs on the latest version of the gold standard with all patches and all upgrades. The Force 3 VDI solution delivers each user’s unique desktop environment, enabling IT to manage change and comply with the DoD agency’s requirements for hundreds of users without compromising user productivity or morale. Force 3 estimates that it can scale to support thousands of employees with only a handful of IT staff.

The VDI solution includes:

* AppSense Environment Manager, which enables each user to call up his or her specific, personalized desktop environment, whether the user is a military staff member, contractor, or civilian employee. Without this automated user environment management capability, the IT team would not have been able to efficiently provision each new desktop and retain users’ personalization.
* Sun Ray 2 devices, ultra-low power, small footprint clients with a built-in card reader
* VMware View and VMware ESX, which enables the agency to deliver rich desktops to any client device with all of the benefits of centralized management while maximizing efficiencies of the server pool through virtualization.

About Force 3

Since 1991, Force 3 has been dedicated to offering innovative technology and information solutions that improve productivity, reduce costs and enhance the way customers conduct business in the government, commercial and healthcare sectors. With only the top engineers and support staff on hand, we ensure a dynamic and effective solution to a customer’s needs, including system design, deployment and management, hardware procurement, professional services and project management. www.force3.com

Top10 Dedicated Servers — Virtual Iron Software ( www.virtualiron.com), today announced higher education institutions such as Jefferson Davis Community College and the University of Pennsylvania have successfully deployed the company’s virtualization software to address operational, academic and research computing requirements. By leveraging enterprise-class server virtualization and management capabilities, Virtual Iron’s higher education customers can quickly streamline their IT infrastructure, reduce power and cooling costs and support business continuity and green computing efforts at a fraction of the cost of comparable offerings.

“Our team needed to control IT infrastructure expenses while ensuring key applications remained available and effective for our user base of human resources employees,” said Chris Blickley, Manager of Information Technology for UPenn Human Resources. “With Virtual Iron we have been able to consolidate servers to not only save money on physical space, but also provide better system responsiveness and uptime. We are currently projecting a 37 percent savings on maintenance and upgrade costs alone.”
Jefferson Davis Community College is another higher education customer that has reaped the benefits of virtualization. With a hybrid environment of Microsoft and open source software, the school needed a virtualization solution that could support both operating systems. By implementing Virtual Iron, Director of Technology and IS, Anthony Hardy was able to streamline support for the server environment and significantly increase usage at one third the cost of comparable offerings.

Top10 Dedicated Hosting — Adobe Systems is collaborating with SpringSource on rich-internet applications combining Flash, AIR and PDF with open-source Java for the enterprise.

The companies Monday announced planned integration between Flash, AIR and PDF served up via the Spring Java framework and SpringSource platforms.

Adobe is working with SpringSource on Spring BlazeDS Integration, an open-source project for “tight integration” between Spring and Adobe’s BlazeDS. A beta is due in a week or two.

Also planned is the SpringSource Adaptor for Adobe LiveCycle Data Services ES, to integrate Spring with server-based push applications and content using Adobe’s Flex. The adaptor is due for early next year, the companies said.

The work is significant for both companies. For Adobe, it means an established partner tuning the popular Spring framework to its open-source BlazeDS project. Specifically, SpringSource has productized Spring through its tc and dm servers, for web applications and Java.

SpringSource gets a toe hold in the growing RIA market. In this case, it means Spring, tc and dm servers can be used to serve up enterprise data to rich clients using video, audio, or AJAX, or it can adopt a plain paperless office scenario through Adobe’s use of PDF. LiveCycle partners currently include SAP, IBM and EMC Documentum.

BlazeID is Adobe’s server-based Java system for remoting and web messaging that Adobe said lets you easily connect to back-end distributed data and push data to Flex and AIR. LiveCycle Data Services ES, meanwhile, is designed to simplify the work of building server push-based and real-time systems. The system lets you track potential problems and provides features like synchronization and paging.
