Windows Server 2008 with IIS 7.0 provides an open platform for hosting PHP applications from a single server. With optimized IIS support for both .NET and PHP, as well as native support for SQL, developers are discovering that the Microsoft Web Platform is more flexible and performs better than alternative platforms.
“NaviSite continues to be one of the leading U.S. hosting companies participating in the Microsoft WebsiteSpark program,” said John Zanni, general manager of Worldwide Hosting at Microsoft. “NaviSite’s combination of strong service and deep expertise with both open source and Microsoft technologies make it an excellent collaborator for Web pros looking to build stronger, more technically advanced Windows Web solutions.”

PEER 1 Network Enterprises, Inc. (TSX: PIX), the global online business hosting provider has today launched a new dedicated hosting suite to help e-commerce customers cash-in on the Christmas rush. The bundle has been launched to help businesses overcome the impact of the postal strike and credit crunch, and has been tailor made to suit e-commerce businesses. The bundle can be scaled back after Christmas once normal trading levels resume.
“Most online businesses can manage site traffic and speed during normal trading periods, but few have the capacity to handle the ten-fold increase they can expect this December”, said Dominic Monkhouse, UK MD, PEER 1.
“This will result in site crashes, slow check-out processes and disgruntled consumers who will gladly pay more for the same product on a faster site. E-commerce businesses can’t afford to drive consumers away this Christmas. One of the most important aspects of e-tail is speed, especially at check-out,” said Dominic.
“A site that takes five minutes to load will be abandoned and not re-visited. A good way to test whether or not your site will stand up is to use a tool like Load Impact to test how much traffic your site can handle. You can simulate behaviour right down to the shopping cart, and anticipate situations like ten times the normal level of traffic. If the site crashes or is incredibly slow, you know you’re not ready for Christmas.”
To ensure online revenues are safe this Christmas, PEER 1 is offering e-commerce customers a 52% saving on a fully scalable hosting bundle priced at under £400 per month, including:
• Fully managed dedicated firewall
• 1 x Web Server and 1 x DB Server for PCI Compliance
• SAN Managed Backup for both servers
• Advanced monitoring enabling proactive management of server
• SSL certificate for added security
• Bi-weekly vulnerability scan and report on how improvements can be made
• 1 hour hardware replacement guarantee – backed by money-back guarantee
• Dedicated Technical Account Manager
• Full access to MyPEER1.com customer portal
“We know that consumers will base which sites they chose to visit on previous experience, so online retailers only get one chance to prove the worth of their site. With online shopping set to peak this Christmas, more web traffic than ever before means that e-tailers will thrive or fail based on their ability to maintain a fast and reliable site,” said Dominic.

The Apache Software Foundation (ASF) has opened early registration for ApacheCon US, taking place 2-6 November 2009 at the Oakland Marriott City Center in Oakland, California. The official ASF user conference, trainings, and expo returns to the Bay Area, which is considered to be the original “home” of the Foundation in the United States, and the location of the very first ApacheCon ten years ago. Early registration savings end 14 August 2009.
ApacheCon brings together Foundation members, code contributors, users, developers, system administrators, business managers, service providers, and vendors for a week of training classes, seminars, sharing and hacking. Drawing internationally-renowned thought leaders, contributors, influencers, and organizations in the Open Source community, ApacheCon offers insight into the culture and community that develops and shepherds more than 100 industry-leading Open Source projects, including Apache HTTP Server — the world’s most popular Web server software.
The conference program for this year’s ApacheCon US is the most extensive to date, featuring world-class keynote addresses, nearly 100 training hours, more than 80 presentations, dozens of Fast Feather sessions on emerging technologies from the ASF Incubator, plus dedicated Apache UnConferences, project-specific MeetUps, and impromptu and entertaining Lightning Talks. Many sessions are open to the general public, including the BarCampApache, select evening social events, Birds of a Feather gatherings, and the Hackathon, where attendees can collaborate on various code bases alongside ASF Committers.
The event is expected to be the largest gathering of the Apache community, where the Foundation’s landmark 10th Anniversary celebrations culminate with the Big Feather Birthday Bash.
“This is an incredible time for the Apache community, as we continue to build on our foundation and address the key innovations, issues, and trends shaping the industry today,” said conference co-chair William A. Rowe, Jr. “ApacheCon US 2009 is the must-attend event this year: we are working to create a first-rate, productive conference experience, with more sessions, more hands-on learning, and more social events. In celebration of the ASF’s milestone anniversary, new evening meeting activities and extended BarCampApache will be opened to the public in appreciation of their support over these fast-flying years.”
ApacheCon gives attendees an inside look at some of the ASF’s most popular established projects, as well as cutting-edge technologies and industry topics that include:
* Web servers and servlet containers such as Apache HTTP Server and Apache Tomcat

How a php.ini File is Read
When the PHP interpreter starts up, it behaves according to settings specified in any availabe php.ini file. The Web server will look for this file in the following locations and in the following order:
- The directory from which the PHP script was called
- The root of your Web directory (typically public_html)
- The Web server’s default php.ini
The Web server’s PHP configuration file will always be used if you don’t have your own. You can find the Web server’s current php.ini file in /usr/local/lib/php/php.ini-dist on vergil or ovid. Inspecting the settings in this file may be helpful if you are troubleshooting a problem with your configuration.
Where is my php.ini?
The path where PHP looks for its php.ini file is built into PHP on compile time. To find out that path, use a PHP script that does a phpinfo() call. This will display a huge table of all of PHP’s configuration variables.
You can simply create a new file (name it “phpinfo.php”, for example) that contains the single line
<?php phpinfo(); ?>
Upload that file anywhere on your website and call it up in your browser.

Advantages and disadvantages of the different systems
Really it plays no much too big role, whether decide you for a BSD system or a Linux distribution. OpenBSD owns the call to guarantee the greatest possible security and stability. During the last seven years only one was discovered (from the outside accessible) security gap in the standard installation. So fantastically this may also sound at first: The security under OpenBSD is dependent - like in Linux - primarily, from the clean configuration of the installed software and regular playing in of security updates. A security hole in the mail server or FTP server affects with OpenBSD as seriously like under Linux.
A little bit differently it looks to the stability. SUSE places big value of actual software packages. This feels well for the marketing, but often badly for the system stability. Indeed, falls are practically never to be registered on a shed SUSE system
Maintenance and care
Who has free hand with a choice of the operating system, should follow the different attempts with the care and maintenance of the Unix flavors. In particular if more than one server is to be maintained, the dependable, quick and easy care becomes an important criterion.
Debian lies here quite clearly in front: It can be complemented not only more than two commands comfortably around the newest security updates, also a system update from potato to woody is as uncomplicated and is possible even in the running company - without »clean new installation«-. It is to be assumed from the fact that in the coming updates can be renounced the protracted and complicated new installation and a Debian system without luxurious maintenance works a whole server life long be ran.
With other systems this is natural not at all. Though an OpenBSD system can be also updated in the running company (only one restart is necessary on compiling the sources), indeed, up to now the method is anything but trivial. Even if only »a little thing« fails, it can happen that the computer is not available with the next restart any more. Playing in of security updates is simple for in addition installed packages, but, unfortunately, the patches of system reason components are exclusively manual and are possible with additional compilation of the programs.
With SUSE is available with you a comfortable possibility for playing in of security updates, nevertheless, the service of the tool needs getting used to and a version upgrade develops problematically.
Updates are a little recommendable here and have basically merely high view of success when becomes the afterwards higher version number jumped and not possibly compiled programs in the system were integrated.
Because you hardly become twice per year your system of a version next upgraded, the new installation of the system is recommended for SUSE rather.
The latter becomes necessary always then when security updates are made available to the version used by you not further. With SUSE the nursing time amounts currently approximately three years.
Clean installation
Another for beginner’s important criterion is the installation. SUSE owns with YaST a comfortable setup program friendly to beginner with which also reducing an existing Windows partition is possible without expertise.
On a server only really required programs and packages should run basically. This simplifies playing in of security updates and, besides, does not use needlessly hard disk capacities. Who is pressed for time or is not sure as a beginner which system components are to be selected, will be glad about a clean minimum system. The installation sizes like:
Debian 3.0.r4 approximately 260 mb
SUSE 9.2 approximately 600 mb
OpenBSD 3.6 approximately 210 mb
OpenBSD is astonishingly small really. Even if on account of the not available possibility to carry out a fine package preselection in the Installer yet all important components of a web server do not exist, the system is already installed nearly completely: ssh, apache and sendmail belong to the basic configuration. On the other hand, this can turn out as a disadvantage:
The clean, manual deinstallation from sendmail or apache is trivial everything other, because the components were integrated not as packages, but count to the base system and can be deleted thus only manually.
Hardware support
Unfortunately, the hardware support of many manufacturers leaves much to be desired for alternative operating systems strongly. Who has acquired a Windows-desktop system or a laptop, cannot be sure about the full hardware support already of built-in network cards. Really are found rather often cards which can pose problems and not be integrated, perhaps. Therefore, you should already check before the purchase of hardware whether for your operating system the required drivers are available.
The palette of supported hardware is not as extensive with OpenBSD completely as with NetBSD. If you liked to seat a BSD system, but your hardware is not supported in full extent, is recommended a look at the hardware data bank of NetBSD.
